Morbid eats

I've been without internet for a little while due to an error by my service provider. Very irksome.

My big news is that last week I made Funeral Sandwiches.

Usually I call them Legion or Old Lady Sandwiches but I recently discovered that my Sweetie also knows this special treat so I made two loafs of bread worth.

Allow me to explain.

As a legion brat I was often invited to come and help make loads of those little triangle sandwiches that are traditionally served at Funerals, Baby Showers, Legion events, etc. They come in a variety of flavours including salmon, egg salad, ham salad with relish mixed in, tuna, etc.

The real treat as a legion brat was that after a legion event the leftover triangles would get tossed back into the sandwich bags all together and sent home with my mom. They would then have time to soak up the flavours of all the other sandwiches and the bread would get this thick but fluffy texture. We would then gorge ourselves upon them for however long they lasted.

It was always something I had treasured from childhood but alas my legion chapter gave up it's charter in 2002 and I haven't had them since.

Then I learned that my sweetie, as the son of a united church minister had experienced something similar. After funerals the old church ladies would send the leftover sandwiches home with his dad. They would be put out for lunch or dinner and the whole family would have a nosh.

I was so excited to be able to share this wierd little piece of nostalgia I went out and bought two loaves of bread, a dozen eggs, some tuna, canned ham, and relish. I made a loaf of all egg salad, half a loaf of ham and half a loaf of tuna. Cut them all into triangles mixed them up in the sandwhich bags and let them sit over night.

Then I and my roommates all gorged on sandwhiches for dinner (and lunch the next day).

Next rare treat, baby shower punch.
